August 2017 Dividend Income Report

By | September 1, 2017

August is officially in the history books and that means it’s time to take stock of how the portfolio did. One of the things that occurred in August was that I finally received my bonus from work. With that bonus, I wrote about how I invested $15,000 into my portfolio. This led to an increase in my position in three companies, namely ABBV, JNJ and XOM, for a total of $2000. Those positions were increased in August because those companies are with Computershare. The remaining $8000 will be invested during the first week in September based on Capital One Investing automatic investing schedule.  The other $5000 was used to pay off debt and help family. Those were the highlights in August. Now, let’s see how much dividend income I received in my portfolio.

Dividend Income

In August, I received a total of $21.95 in dividend income broken down as follows:

  • ABBV – $1.91
  • APPL – $2.51
  • HRL —  $2.28
  • O —– $3.12
  • PG —- $4.17
  • T —— $7.96

Those are a lot of companies that paid me dividends in August. The $21.95 is a respectable figure for the month based on the value of my portfolio. The dividend tracker has been updated accordingly.

Forward Annual Dividend

One of the significant milestones reached in August was that I broke the $300 mark in my forward annual dividend income projection. At the time of this writing, the forward annual dividend is sitting at $309.34.  When I started my dividend portfolio blog, the forward annual dividend was $30.13, which is reflected in the logo for the site. I only started focusing on blogging in about the fall of 2016.

Actually, the very first post published on this site was on November 1, 2015. But, it wasn’t until May 2016, that I started blogging more regularly. Even then, I took some time off to concentrate on work, and since the fall of 2016, I’ve been blogging and concentrating on building my portfolio.

It’s tough sometimes starting small. $30.13 in one year is nothing. Well, $309.34 is not nothing, but it’s also not nearly retirement income. But that’s not the point, as I’m not retiring today. So, I will continue to consistently grow my dividend portfolio as much as I can. Financial independence is a wonderful feeling that I can’t wait to experience.

Finally, I expect to crush that amount in September. The $309.34 does not include the $8000 that will be infused into the portfolio next week. So, hopefully, by then I can exceed the $500 mark. The goal for the year is $700. I’ll write more about this in another post.

New Stocks Added

I wrote about this before in my previous post, so I won’t belabor the point. But, in August, I added the following stocks to my dividend portfolio:

  • CSCO
  • GIS
  • GWW
  • PFE
  • SBUX

I can’t wait until those companies start paying me dividends.

Conclusion

August was a much better month than July. I’m still not at the point where I can do yearly comparisons, but by all indications, I had a solid month.

How did you perform in August? Let me know by commenting below.

    Hey DP,

congrats on reaching 300$ for the year to date – it’s definitely something to build on. And compared to your numbers in 2016 it’s awesome. The start often takes time and the journey to FI is a long and winding road, but it’s worth the patience…Keep on grinding!!
And you picked some solid companies with O, PG, ABBV, CSCO, SBUX etc.

My dividend income for August 2017 stands at 216,52 $ and it represents a yoy increase of 42%. The blog post will be out later in the day.

Wow, that’s amazing growth of the portfolio and forward income.
My income for August is pretty similar to yours but with your new additions to the portfolio it will be tiny compared to yours going forward 🙂
During August, I also received dividends from O and PG.
    Keep on going!

Awesome BI. O and PG are great companies. I’m sure your portfolio won’t always be tiny if you keep adding to it. Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks Brian. I’m not sure I’m gonna get there but I like the fact that it’s not so high I can’t reach it and it’s not so low that I’ll just easily pass it.

Agreed. I’m not the best at understanding valuations but I do believe the companies I’m invested in are solid companies to invest in for the future.

Congrats. What a nice growth. Sadlly we had some other major expenses so no investmant for me. A good bunch of shares and a good mix. Personaly I look at CSCO. GIS dont look promising due to decline in sales. PFE and SBUX looks a bit overvalues, but if you bet on growth then its ok 🙂 Good luck building thay snowball! Your doing way better then me 🙂

Thanks P2035. I don’t like the idea of buying stocks while overvalued, but I’m also invested for the very long term and so hopefully it won’t matter that much if I don’t get it at the most optimal price today. As long as your keep building that portfolio yourself, you’ll do great.

Gratz on breaking the $300 mark! That’s some solid growth from that $30.13. And with the $8,000 you’re going to add should your dividend income take another big step. Love it.

Big ups on hitting that $300 forward dividend income. Going from $30 to $300 in about a year is awesome and the increases will only get larger on a dollar basis as you stick with it. Can’t wait to see how September treats you as a lot of companies pay there.

Thanks TITM. I’m really looking forward to September as well. I don’t know if the five companies I invested in pay in September or not. I know I could check, but I would rather be surprised!

Thanks Suresh. The growth rate is very motivating. I started the portfolio small, and it still is, but it’s exciting to see it grow. I can’t wait until the snowball effect really takes off where, for example, I get enough dividends from one company to buy at least one share of that company. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

You had one heck of a month man! Awesome job! I really like what you did with your bonus. Especially the ABBV buy. That is high on my watch list, but I don’t have any capital yet to buy any. Same with PFE. Being able to add 5 new positions to your portfolio in one month is a feat in itself. I also share positions with CSCO and GIS, as well as some of your dividend payers T, O, and HRL. Great minds think I guess alike right? With your 8k investment, that should easily propel your forward dividends over the $500 mark. Catching up to me too quickly, I better step up my game! lol jk. Keep that snowball rolling.

Awesome Daze. I did pass the $500 mark. I may write separately about that, but we will see. My goal for 2017 is $700, so I’m not sure if I’ll make it, but I still have a few more months to go. And yes, great minds do think a like :).

Hey great job. I have been tossing around the idea of writing to a blog but I feel like only having 200$ annual wouldn’t give me much to write about. It seems like this has not stopped you at all, 🤔 Maybe there is room for one more little guy. Keep up the good work.

Jesse, I’d say go for it. Blogging has been amazing for me so far. It helps to keep going. Sure, $200 annually is not a lot at first but, with a supportive community behind you, that money can compound in growth. We all had to start from somewhere. It’s been said that the journey of a thousand miles begin with a single step. I took mine and I encourage you to take yours – whatever that may be. Thanks for stopping by.
