Should I Buy A Premium Website?

premium website

I’m trying to determine if I should buy a premium website.

Here’s the situation: Having bought the condo, my plan is to put the title into an LLC for asset protection. Ordinarily, if that’s the only thing I wanted to do, then it really wouldn’t matter what I name the LLC. However, after owning this blog for the past few years, I thought it would be a good idea to have a blog for the LLC as well. Here is where it gets interesting.

Here’s the situation: Having bought the condo, my plan is to put the title into an LLC for asset protection. Ordinarily, if that’s the only thing I wanted to do, then it really wouldn’t matter what I name the condo. However, after owning this blog for the past few years, I thought it would be a good idea to have a blog for the LLC as well. Here is where it gets interesting.

Purpose Of The Blog

Initially, I thought there was a requirement to have minutes for the single-member LLC. I’m not sure if it’s required, but I decided to do so anyway. So, initially, I thought I would just post the minutes online on a monthly basis. But then I realized that I could also track the income I make on the condo, just like I track the dividends I receive from my portfolio on this blog.

In addition to just tracking the income, I also wanted to leave the possibility open of using the site to funnel possible tenants or guests to my condo if they are so inclined. This would likely be years in the future when I self manage the site, or possibly more immediate if I could figure out a way to generate referrals to the property management company so that I get the benefit of a lower property management fee for owner referrals.

So I wanted one name to accomplish all of those purposes. A tall order indeed.

The Perfect Name

The perfect name for this new business blog has eluded me. And all the good names I can think of are taken. Average names that I can think of are either good for one aspect of the business (LLC as a holding company only), but not the other part (blog to track income) (or to attract or refer guests to the condo).

Here are the leading contenders for a name:

  1. Building Financial Assets
  2. Income Lovers

Ideally, the website would have the same name as the company.

Building Financial Assets was the leading contender for a while. I even created a logo for that name. But I’m still not 100% sold on the idea.

Income Lovers has a nice ring to it. Plus it’s short and easy to remember and that’s a good thing. But, would you want to rent from a company named Income Lovers? Probably not.

The Third Alternative

Another name I was considering is very similar to Every Dollar Counts, LLC. Now that’s taken, but let’s use that as an example.

Assume the name of the company and website I’m interested in is Every Dollar Counts. I think it’s a good name. As a holding company, the name fits well. Also, it really doesn’t matter what I name the LLC if it is just for holding purposes.

As a blog name to either a) track my real estate income or b) use it as a way to bring guests to my condo, I think the name works. I would market it in a way to suggest that I’m looking out for the little guy and understand that every dollar counts (not that I’m a greedy LLC and wants to get every dollar from my guests).

Again, assuming the name I’m interested in is Every Dollar Counts (it’s not but very similar), the name of the LLC, which would be Every Dollar Counts, LLC, is already taken by the State. So I can’t have that full name. But the partial name, Every Dollar, LLC is available. I checked with the State to see if that’s allowed, and it is.

The Problem

Every Dollar Counts (again, as a close example to the real thing) is a premium website and costs between $500 and $1000. Given my reasons above, I’m not convinced that it’s worth it, but it might be. There are other cheap names available such as: (a) Every Moment Counts and possibly (b) Every Memory Counts. But again, while (a) and (b) referenced above would be good names to attract guests, it’s not a good name to attract visitors to the blog who are interested in tracking income I earn off real estate.

One weird strategy I’m considering is to name the LLC whatever I want, such as Every Moment Counts, LLC, and have a separate name for the website to track the income, like Every Dollar Counts.com. Not ideal, but certainly a possibility.

The other problem is that the website Every Dollar Counts (plural) is taken (and hence at a premium). But the name Every Dollar Count (singular) is available (but grammatically incorrect at the average cheap price).

On the upside, I would probably have this blog for life (or the next several years). That should give me time to grow the site regardless of whatever name I choose.

Conclusion

What do you think? Should I buy the website Every Dollar Counts at a premium, or the singular but grammatically incorrect Every Dollar Count or something else?

Again, Every Dollar Counts is not the actual website but the one I’m thinking about buying is super close to that name.

I would also note that, had someone asked me my thoughts on the name Yelp, Yahoo, or Google, I would say those are horrible names for a website. I would also say the name Apple is a bad name for a computer or technology company and that the name Zillow just outright makes no sense. So, what do I know?

I’m looking forward to your comments on this post.

I don’t think it matters. The website can just be another asset that the LLC owns and operates. Plus theres, likely not going to be much audience overlap. If I’m looking to rent a condo that’s what I’m after not income investments. That’s just my $0.02.

Good point JC. I’m leaning towards Building Financial Assets for the name of the LLC. And potentially the same name for the website. But regardless of what I call the website, I would likely go with BFA, because it fits what I’m trying to do personally. So, if I bought more real estate (likely), I could put it under that named LLC.
