I May Get Another Job

So, as you may know, I will officially lose my current job. However, for all practical purposes, I am retired. Well, although I haven’t been retired for very long, I can say without a doubt that RETIREMENT IS BORING!!! I totally understand why people who are retired continue to work. The good news is, that I am also financially independent. So, I don’t need a job. That’s a great position to be in and I fully recognize that. Truthfully, I am at a crossroad in my life and it can go in any direction. So, let’s dive in to see whether or not I decide to get another job.

Life’s Choices

Here are the realistic choices that I have. I can do any of the following:

a. Do nothing.

b. Get a professional job associated with my career field.

c. Get a job that is not associated with my career field

Let’s discuss.

A. Do Nothing

Imagine, sitting on the beach drinking your favorite smoothie or alcoholic beverage. Or, at a moment’s whim, one decides to travel to Europe for two weeks to visit an international city. Sounds great, right? One option I have is to not work, and just do what I can to enjoy life. That may include traveling, going to the beach, and other fun activities.

But, here’s the problem! All of that is boring if I am only doing it on my own. Most of my friends work during the day time and so, unless I find another individual who has retired early and wants to hang out, then life will likely be boring.

Besides, there’s only so much traveling and going to the beach I can do before I want something more. Even if I decide not to get another job, I would want to volunteer somewhere or work on projects to keep my mind stimulated. So, although doing nothing is an option, it’s the least likely scenario.

B. Get A Professional Job Associated With My Career Field

This is a very tempting option! Although I am financially independent, if I were to get another professional job, I would feel like I am rich. That’s because most of that income would be icing on the cake. I would be able to pay my bills without any difficulty and plenty left over for entertainment and investing. Indeed, this is one of the only ways I can think of that would allow me to save enough money for a down payment on another (and final) beach condo.

So, there are distinct financial advantages to getting another professional job. I would definitely take over my mom’s mortgage payment and that would reduce a lot of stress in her life. Moreover, I would be easily able to afford the most recent beach condo that I purchased. In other words, if no one rented the condo, I would still be in a position to comfortably afford the mortgage payment, which is over $5000 per month.

That being said, getting another professional job that is associated with my career field would invite added stress in my life. I really don’t need stress. The good news is that I am well experienced in my career filed such that I can, arguably, better handle the stress. But, only time will tell.

If I did get a professional job and couldn’t handle the stress, then I would absolutely be done with my career field after that and be fully retired!!! Moreover, given the fact that I would be in a better position to help my mom (and myself) financially, I think there would be more positives than negatives. Like I said, this is a very tempting option.

C. Get A Job That Is Not Associated With My Career Field

Getting a job that is not associated with my career field is a distinct possibility. The leading contender is for me to become a bartender. I know nothing about it but I’ve always been interested in bartending. In fact, I plan on attending a free bartending class in September. Assuming I like it, I can sign up for the full 2 week courts at a nominal cost.

Quite frankly, bartending is a such a skill that I could still do it on a part time basis, even if with another full-time job, and I can bartend pretty much anywhere I go. However, I am actively considering doing this full-time (relatively speaking), and making it a second career.

While the income from bartending would not be nearly as lucrative as the income from a professional job associated with my career field, any additional income I make would be icing on the cake and help relieve whatever financial stress that might otherwise exist.

Final Thoughts

I am both excited and scared at the possibilities. Sometimes I hate having choices because I end up suffering from paralysis analysis.

For what it’s worth, I’ve only applied for 2 professional jobs that were associated with my career field. One of the jobs I applied for had 99 applications associated with that position, but I was able to land an interview. It is a very stressful job, but as I mentioned above, it would alleviate some financial stress as well, for both me and my mom.

I try not to count my chickens before they hatch, but it’s going to be an interest decision to make if I get that job.

There are other considerations as well, such as the job location, the quality of health care and the quality of life that I will have. But, ultimately, I think I’ll be ok regardless of whether I choose option B or option C above. To complicate matters, my health has taken a turn for the worst, but more than that in a future post.

So, what did you think of this post?

But don’t forget that in a professional job there is a high stress factor. This is much lower in a non-professional job and you also learn new things and see the whole thing from a different perspective. If I had the choice, I would quit my IT job and do something manual. Unfortunately, I am still dependent on the income to feed my portfolio. I like your blog here very much, greetings from Germany

Thanks for the comment. Germany is awesome. I’ve been there a couple of times.

I totally agree that the professional job is a high level of stress. I’ve literally only applied for two professional jobs (one of which is squarely out of my reach). My decision would be so much easier if they turned me down. I am super competitive for it though. So, the question is, what happens if they say yes. As of right now, I don’t know what I am going to do. The high stress factor in the professional job is something that is definitely making me hesitant about going that route. Regardless of the decision, I will post it on here.

Good luck with your financial journey. Eventually, you will get to the point where you are not dependent on income to feed your portfolio. You can do it!!!
